I started thatching as an apprentice in the Waveny Valley 15 years ago and started my own business in 2001. In early 2007 I gained the title of Master Thatcher, which is given by the East Anglia Master Thatchers Association only after a lengthy process of assessment of the standard of work submitted.
In the past six years I have been based in mid Suffolk, but have travelled to many other parts of the country for various projects. On larger projects I work with a small team of local experienced thatchers. I specialise in long straw thatching, as it is the traditional material used in mid Suffolk, and I have recently started growing my own straw to ensure a supply of local quality materials.
I take pride in completing my work to the highest standard, ensuring that the thatch has a good lifespan. All my work is done to the specifications set by the EAMTA. I am available in any area of the UK for major works, and in East Anglia for ridging, repairs, advice, and surveying.
Although conservation work (replacing worn thatch) is a big part of my work, myself and like minded colleagues are currently promoting the reinstatement of thatch to previously thatched buildings and most importantly, to thatching more new buildings.
